With the world clamoring for more Jamaican artists who are original but adhering to the classic standard of reggae enters a young lion by the name Hefla Nyah.
The artist already has a number one single Take You There (Jamaica) that hit the top spot in April 2012 and another Lies & Tricks feat Lutan Fyah currently climbing the Jamaica Top 25 Reggae Chart.
Other releases shoring up the newcomers growing repertoire are 'Lose Control' a collaboration with Natural Black, 'Facebook Girls', 'The Shepherd' and 'Ethiopian Child' feat French dubsters Ondubground. These singles are laying the foundation for an album in progress, titled 'The Truth' slated for a 2013 release.
Christened Tristan Duncan the Rastafarian youth was born in the district of Content in the agrarian parish of St Mary in Jamaica, where the seeds of reggae musical affinity were sown in his young mind by listening to sound systems playing in the village square.
He migrated to the East Coast US city of Philadelphia at age 13 but was kept, in his own words, "plugged in to yard” by a loving mother constantly playing her native music.
He started out writing poetry but as his confidence grew and encouraged by his brother and songwriting partner Kevin he started to test the proverbial waters by appearing at open mikes and talent shows. Initially hooking up with an outfit called Just Sounds Studios he recorded sparingly. But as his previous body of early works remained unreleased his hunger to put something on the market went unfulfilled.
His quest led him to the 619 Recording Studio owned and operated by four Jamaicans. Two of the four partners Patrick Guitsie Dunn formerly of pioneering Reggae band Riddem Nation and Roger Grant ex-manager of reggae star Natural Black took more than a keen interest in working him.
This association has blossomed into a mutually beneficial relationship where the natural resources of the artist have merged with the experience and assets of the 619 Entertainment Group. He has also made his introduction to many audiences recently opening for Richie Spice, sharing billing on a major festival in his hometown with Beres Hammond and Jimmy Cliff and on the annual Peoples Festival in Wilmington Delaware alongside Bushman and Junior X.
The rising artist who cites conscious dancehall dj Capleton as one of his influences and who has a similar fiery delivery albeit one tempered by catchy melodies states that his goal is to bring something positive to the table. In addition to his stage name he has also adopted the hyphenated moniker of Di Ghetto Fyah which is in keeping with his social awareness and continuous effort of addressing injustices being mated out to the poorer class.
