Cultural sing jay Hefla Nyah impresses on the new Essence of Life Riddim with a strong musical message delivered via the single The Shepherd.
The Shepherd talks of the artists regarding his work as a mission with him "sent out there to do the work" and further describes himself as the sheep and "Jah as the Shepherd".
The song rides the bouncy one drop and sits on a bed of lush strings with his voice distinct with conviction and surrounded by soothing background harmonies. The single now out on all digital platforms is a must for lovers of genuine roots reggae.
Hefla Nyah christened Tristan Duncan is a native of Jamaica and hails from the central parish of St Mary. He migrated to the United States in his teens and by his early twenties started to exercise his inner musical desires first as a poet then as a sing jay.
The tall and somewhat angular Hefla while mixing his expressions with a touch of dancehall is however firmly committed to the more cultural side of reggae. He cites Capleton as one of his influences and a model, of an artist that as been able to straddle the two sides of the genre while remaining clean.
In 2010 his quest led him to 619 Entertainment where he started to work with Roger Grant and Patrick Dunn. This partnership as yielded a mix tape The Ghetto Fyah and several singles. This was also the catalyst for the current single as Grant made a connection with long time friend Fitzroy Francis of Mightyful 13 Records who produced The Shepherd.
Mightyful 13 Records is throwing its full weight behind all the tracks on the Essence Of Life which also includes songs from Chrisinti, Zanadu and Michelle Gordon. The Shepherd is distributed by VP through its subsidiary VPAL and looks set to be another chart topper for the rising rasta artist who also had a number one single on Jamaica Top 25 Reggae Charts with the patriotic Take You There(Jamaica) back in April.
